TEXT ON PICTURE:
ARMAGH - ARD MACHA. THE HEIGHT OF MACHA - The name Ard Macha "The Height of Macha",
commemorates an ancient heroine who lies buried there as legends tell. One says she was Macha, wife
of Nemed, a very early coloniser of Ireland, and another that she was the Warrior-Queen, "Macha
of the Red-Gold Hair", who won her father's kingdom from three male competitors, and founded
her capital at Emania - now the Navan Ring, near Armagh - about 450 B.C. In A.D. 455, St. Patrick
founded the church and city of Armagh, and ever since it has been the ecclesiastical capital of
Ireland, and the seat of the Primate.
