BALLINASLOE - BEAL-ATHA-NA-SLUAIGHEADH. THE FORD-MOUTH OF THE HOSTINGS - The old Irish name
of Ballinasloe in Galway is Beal-athana-sluaigheadh. This name, which is mentioned,
by the "Four Masters ", signifies "the ford-mouth of the hostings," the word
sluagh, usually translated "host," signifying any multitude of people. In the "Annals
of the Four Masters" however, it is usually applied to an army. Ballinasloe is noted for its
great horse, cattle and sheep fair, held annually on the first Tuesday in October and the four following
days. The population of the town is 5,243 (1926).
