BANTRY - BEANNTRAIGHE. THE RACE OF BEANN - One of the sons of Conor mac Nessa, King of
Ulster in the first century, was Beann, some of whose
descendants settled in Wexford and others in Cork. The barony of Bantry in the former county and the
town of Bantry in the latter perpetuate their name - Beanntraighe, the race of descendants of Beann.
Bantry, a seaport town on Bantry Bay, has a population of 2,681 (1926). South of the town is Bantry
House, the seat of the Earls of Bantry. The Earldom, however, became extinct in 1891.
