TEXT ON PICTURE:
CARLOW - CEATHARLOCH. THE FOUR LAKES - The old name of this town Ceatharloch means,
according to Joyce, "four lakes", the
name being pronounced Caherlough, which was easily softened down to Carlow. According to tradition
the River Barrow once formed four lakes there, but of these there is now no trace. The line of an
18th century song "Down by the lakes in Carlow", recalls the old tradition. Carlow, the
principal town in the county of the same name, has a population of 7,175 (1926). In the town
and neighbourhood are flour mills, boot and mineral water factories, malt houses, and the first Irish
sugar-beet factory.
