TEXT ON PICTURE:
CLAREMORRIS - CLAR CLOINNE MUIRIS. THE PLANK BRIDGE OF CLANN MAURICE - Clar Cloinne Muiris,
"The Plank Bridge of Clann Maurice", refers to Maurice
de Prendergast, Lord of Prendergast, one of the famous band of knightly adventurers (half Norman, half
Welsh) who invaded Ireland with Strongbow, Earl of Pembroke, in 1169. The place where he crossed the
river by the plank is still pointed out. Maurice de Prendergast is described by historians as a
"stout and brave soldier". He eventually joined the Order of the Knights of St. John of
Jerusalem, and died Prior of Kilmainham in 1205.
