CLONMACNOISE - CLUAIN-MIC-NOIS. THE MEADOW OF THE SON OF NOS - This name appears in two
forms in the "Annals of the Four Masters", the
older Annals having the form Cluain-maccu-Nois, "the meadow of the sons of Nos". Nos was
the son of Fiadhach (Feeagh), a chief of the tribe of the Dealbhna-Eathra (now the barony of Garrycastle,
in Offaly). The Abbey of Clonmacnoise, founded by St. Kieran in 541, gained European fame as a seat
of learning, and was the burial place of many of the Irish Kings. Remains of the famous "Seven
Churches" are still to be seen, besides two Round Towers and three crosses.
