TEXT ON PICTURE:
CLONMEL - CLUAIN-MEALA. THE MEADOW OF THE HONEY - This rich and fertile district bore the
name clonmel, Cluain-Meala, "The Meadow of the
Honey" before there was any town there. There are many other places in Ireland with the same
name, the frequency with which it occurs being easily understood when one remembers what an important
food honey was in the days before sugar became common, and when mead, made from fermented honey, was
a common drink. Clonmel was the capital of the palatinate jurisdiction in Tipperary. The west Gate
and some portion of the walls are still standing.
