TEXT ON PICTURE:
CLONTARF - CLUAIN-TAIRBH. BULL'S MEADOW - This name is a curruption of Cluain-tairbh,
"Bull's Meadow", an adjoining
townland being named Clonturk, Cluaintuire, i.e. "Boar's Meadow". From what ancient droves
these places derive their names is not known. Clontarf however, is famous for the defeat of the
armies of the Norsemen by King Brian Boru in 1014. This defeat was of great importance not only to
Ireland but to Europe, for it broke the power of all the Danish settlements, so that they never
recovered their former strength. The Templars were settled at Clontarf about 1175, and were succeeded
by the Hospitallers who maintained the Preceptory until the reign of Henry VIII.
