TEXT ON PICTURE:
CORK CORCACH. A\MARSH - The city of Cork derives its name (Coreach - "a Marsh")
from the fact that it is
built over fourteen marshy islands between the hills at the head of the tidal waters of the River Lee.
Founded by S. Fin Barre in the 7th century, Cork subsequently became a Norse city, but its first
charter was granted by King John in 1185. In 1545 it consisted of a walled city occupying only two of
the islands. Its increasing size led to the reclaiming of the island wastes, houses were built upon
them, and the intersecting channels were arched over to form the street.
