DROGHEDA - DROICHEAD-ATHA. THE BRIDGE OF THE FORD - Several towns in Ireland have taken
their names from bridges, which were frequently erected
at places where a ford across the river was already in use. The name of Drogheda, County Louth,
preserves the memory of the old ford where the northern coast-road crossed the River Boyne, and in
ancient writings it is always called Droichead-atha, "the bridge of the ford". Drogheda is
an important sea-port and market-town on both banks of the Boyne. The principal industries are
spinning, weaving, corn and saw mills, brewing, meat-packing, etc. The population is 12,688 (1926).
