TEXT ON PICTURE:
DUNMANWAY - DUN-NA-MBEANN BUIDHE. THE FORTRESS OF THE YELLOW PINNANCLES - Originally called
Dun-na-mbeann, "The Fortress of the Pinnacles", the syllable
"way" was added to its name at a later date. This word "way" is believed to be a
corruption of the word "buidhe", meaning yellow, thus making the name of the town signify
"The Fortress of the Yellow Pinnacles". The name was derived either from the old dun or
fortress, or else from a fanciful idea of the shape of the ridge or rocks north of the town. In a
grant made in the time of Queen Elizabeth it is referred to as Downemanvoy.
