FERMOY - FEARA-MUIGHE. THE MEN OF THE PLAIN - The well-known town of Fermoy, County Cork,
is called in Irish Feara-muighe-Feine, or more shortly, Feara-muighe, "the men of the plain".
Fermoy is a market-town on the River Blackwater, which divides it into two parts, this river and its
tributary the Funshion affording excellent salmon and trout fishing. It was the most important
military station in the south of Ireland, the camps and training grounds being at Moore Park and
Kilworth, two miles from the town. The population is 4,505 (1926).
