TEXT ON PICTURE:
GLENDALOUGH - GLEAN-DA-LOCHA. THE VALLEY OF THE TWO LAKES - The valley of Glendalough,
Co. Wicklow, takes its name from the two lakes so well known to visitors. The Old Irish name
Gleann-da-locha, "the valley of the two lakes", was also given to other glens in Waterford,
Kerry and Galway. Glendalough is famous for the beauty of its scenery, and especially for the
extensive group of historic buildings, some of the most striking in Ireland. These include a Round
Tower, 110 ft. in height, and the ruins of the "Seven Churches", besides stone crosses and
other monuments. The monastery, founded by the hermit St. Kevin in the 6th or 7th cent., became a
famous ecclesiastical centre, and a favourite place of burial.
