TEXT ON PICTURE:
KILCULLEN - CILL-CUILINN. THE CHURCH OF THE HOLLY - Churches of stone were erected in Ireland
as early as the fifth century, and the ruins of many of these ancient strines are still to be seen.
Ceall (inflected case cill) "a church", is one of the most prolific root-words in Irish
nomenclature. Kilcullen in County Kildare is called by Irish writers Cill-Cuilinn, "the church
of the holly", Kildare being, of course, Cill-dara, "the church of the oak". The
holly, cuileann, enters into many names all over Ireland, e.g. Drumcullen (Offaly) "the ridge of
the holly", Moycullen (Galway) "the plain of the holly", etc.
