TEXT ON PICTURE:
KILDARE - CILL-DARA. THE CHURCH OF THE OAK - To one of Ireland's three patron saints,
S. Brigid, is Kildare indebted for its name Cill-dara, "The Church of the Oak". Under the
shadow of a "goodly fair oak", she constructed her little cell, or church, a fine cathedral
and monastery marking the spot in later years. It was at Kildare that S. Brigid kept alight the
sacred lamp, and for this reason she is shown in most pictures as carrying a lamp. Kildare is also
well-known because of the mighty Earls of Kildare, the Fitzgeralds, celebrated in Irish history.
