TEXT ON PICTURE:
KILLARNEY - CILL-AIRNE. THE CHURCH OF THE SLOES - Cill-Airne, "The Church of the
Sloes". The sloe, the berry of the Blackthorn or Draeighean (Dreean) must not be confused with
the Whitethorn or Haw-thorn, which in Irish is Sceach. The sloe has given its name to many places in
Ireland, there being three "Churches of the sloe", while there is also a "Plain of the
sloes", a "Summit of sloes", and a "Sloe-meadow". Killarney with its lakes
and fells, which are celebrated throughtout the whole world, is situated not far from Carrantuohill,
the highest peak in Ireland.
