TEXT ON PICTURE:
KILLRUDDERY - CILL-RIDIRE. THE CHURCH OF THE KNIGHT - Kilruddery, probably Cill-Ridire,
"The Church of the Knight", the name being due no doubt to the fact that distant traces of
a church have been found there. Some authorities, however, describe the name Kilruddery as
Coill Rhydde-rich, "Rhydderich's Wood", from an early Welsh owner. Long before Strongbow's
time there was much intercourse between Wales and Ireland. Welsh princes in their dynastic quarrels
obtained forces from Ireland, or fled thither in their misfortunes. Welsh families settled on the
east coast of Ireland, and held lands there. Rydderich, no doubt, represented such a family.
