TEXT ON PICTURE:
MACROOM - MAGH-CROMTHA. THE SLOPING FIELD - In Old Irish writings Macroom in County Cork is
called Maghcromtha, "the sloping field or plain", an appropriate name, for Macroom stands
on a slope at the base of Sleveen Hill. Cromaghy, near Rosslea, in Fermanagh, is really the same
name with the order of the root-words reversed. Macroom (population in 1926, 2,413) stands on the
Sullane, a tributary of the River Lee, the scenery of the surrounding county being remarkably
picturesque and varied. The noble pile of Macroom Castle is said to have been founded in the reign
of King John.
