TEXT ON PICTURE:
MULLINGAR - MUILEANN CEARR. THE MILL OF CEARR - This name was originally Muileann Cearr,
"The Mill of Cearr". The Irish word for Mill is Muileann, and a considerable number of
places take their names from this word. Examples of such are - Mullivavt, "Mill of the
Stick"; Mullingee, "Mill of the Wind"; Mullenakill, "Mill of the Church".
Mullingar, however, is the largest and best known of them. There is ome uncertainty about the
meaning of Cearr, but most Irish scholars are of the opinion that it is from a man's name. Mullingar,
a busy market town, is a notable centre for anglers fishing in the famous lakes of County Westmeath.
