TEXT ON PICTURE:
POULAPHUCA - POLLA'PHUCA. THE POOL OF THE POOKA - Poll a' Phuca means "the pool of the
pooka", the Pooka being an Irish Fairy well-known in England under the name of Puck. In Ireland
he is an odd mixture of merriment and malignity, and his exploits form the subject of innumerable
legendary tales. He often appears in the shape of a black dog, sometimes as a donkey. He is often
lurking in Raths and Lisses, hence there are many old forts in the country called Lissaphuca and
Rathphuca. The best known place bearing his name is Poulaphuca, among the Wicklow mountains where
the River Liffey falls over a ledge into a deep pool.
