TEXT ON PICTURE:
SKERRIES - SCEIRE. SHARP SEA ROCKS -The Irish word Sceire which means "Sharp Sea
Rocks", is frequently met with in place-names throughout Ireland, the usual forms being Scar,
Skerry or Skerries. It is also applied to other rocks, however, for the names of several inland
places contain the word, e.g. Skervan in Monaghan, which is really Sceir-bhan, white rock. The
Islands known as the Skerries (St. Patrick's Island, Shenick's Island and Colt's Island) lie opposite
the small town of that name, off the coast of the county of Dublin. About four miles from the coast
at Skerries is the Rockabill rock with its lighthouse.
