TEXT ON PICTURE:
TIPPERARY - TIOBRAID-ARANN. THE WELL OF ARA - Many of the early Irish saints established
thier little communities beside springs of
water, and so wells became associated with some of the greatest religious institutions of Ireland.
Tiobra, Tiobraid, means "a well", the more usual word in this meaning being Tobar, which is
found in place-names all over Ireland, e.g. Tobar, Tipper, Tubbrid, etc. The well that gave its
name to the town of Tipperary and which was situated near the main street, is called in the old books
Tiobraid-Arann "the well of Ara". The town, which stands in the wonderfully fertile
"Golden Vale", has a population of 5,554 (1926).
