TEXT ON PICTURE:
TRALEE, KERRY - TRAIGH-LI. THE STRAND OF LI - Tralee in County Kerry is called by
the "Four Masters" Traigh-Li, which is often understood
to mean the shore or stand of the River Lee, on which the town stands. In the "Annals of
Connaught", however, the name appears as Traigh-Li-mie-Dedad, "the strand of Li, the son of
Ded", which suggests that is was named from a man called Li, and this would appear to be the
correct derivation. The town is about a mile from Tralee Bay, with which it is connected by a ship
canal. Large vessels discharge at Fenit, 8 miles to the west, which is connected with Tralee by rail.
The population is 10,536 (1926).
