TRIM, MEATH - ATH-TRUIM. THE FORD OF THE ELDER-TREE - The old Irish name of Trim in the
County of Meath is Ath-Truim "the ford of the elder
or boor-tree", so called from the elder-trees which grew near the old ford across the River
Boyne. Other places with a similar derivation are Trummery (Antrim) - Tromaire "a place where
the elders grow", Tromaun (Roscommmon), Troman (Meath), etc. The town of Trim, which has a
population of 1,325 (1926), contains many interesting ruins of great historic importance, both
ecclesiastical and military. It is the Assize town of the County of Meath.
