TEXT ON PICTURE:
TUAM, GALWAY - TUAIM-DA-GHAULANN. THE TUMULUS OF THE TWO SHOULDERS - Tuam in the County of
Galway is called in Irish Tuaim-da-ghualann, "the tumulus of the two
shoulders", from the shape of the old burial-mound in the neighbourhood. The city is the seat
of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tuam and of the Protestant Bishop. An abbey was founded here in
the 5th century, the episcopal see datting from the 6th century. A red sandstone arch in the old
church is a remarkably fine example of Irish Romanesque work of the 12th century. The population is
3,288 (1926).
